Father standing proudly with twin sons in Jiu-Jitsu uniforms

At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we see it all the time—kids hitting the mats with focus, energy, and joy. Parents cheer from the sidelines, cameras in hand, beaming with pride. But here’s a question we love to ask:

Why let your kids have all the fun?

If your child is already training Jiu-Jitsu, you’re perfectly positioned to take the next step and join them on the journey. Here’s why more and more parents are trading their shoes for a gi and stepping onto the mats themselves:

1. It Sets an Amazing Example

Kids look up to what we do, not just what we say. When they see you investing in your own growth, trying new things, and staying active, it reinforces the values they’re learning in class: discipline, perseverance, and humility.

2. It Builds a Stronger Bond

You’ll share a common language—shrimping, frames, guard passes. You’ll start to see how much effort your child is putting in and understand what a “hard round” really feels like. Jiu-Jitsu becomes more than a drop-off activity—it becomes something you do together.

3. It’s a Seriously Good Workout

Forget the treadmill. Jiu-Jitsu offers full-body conditioning, cardio, strength training, and mobility work—all in one session. It keeps your body moving and your mind sharp.

4. It’s a Mental Reset

Whether you’re juggling work, parenting, or just the day-to-day grind, stepping onto the mat gives you a mental break. There’s something therapeutic about focusing on the present moment and leaving your phone (and stress) on the sidelines.

5. It’s Never Too Late

You don’t need to be an athlete, flexible, or even “in shape” to get started. Jiu-Jitsu meets you where you’re at. And we’ve seen it time and time again—parents who once sat on the bench now rolling right alongside their kids.

6. We’ve Got Classes That Fit Your Life

At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we offer adult classes at the same time as many of our kids’ classes. While your child trains, you can too—no extra drive, no extra planning. Just get on the mat and train.

Ready to Lead by Example?

If your child already trains with us, you’ve taken a powerful step as a parent. Now take one for yourself. Come try an adult class. No pressure. No ego. Just good people, good training, and a chance to be part of something that’s changing lives every day.

See you on the mat.

Jiu-Jitsu helps kids develop real, lasting confidence—not from winning, but from showing up, trying again, and realizing they’re capable of more than they thought. At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we see that quiet strength grow on the mats every day.

Supporting your child in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about coaching them from the sidelines—it’s about trusting the process, encouraging their effort, and letting the coaches do their job. At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we create a structured learning environment where kids can focus, grow, and develop confidence. When parents step back and allow their child to fully engage in class without distraction, they get the best out of their training. Learn how to support your child’s Jiu-Jitsu journey the right way!

Starting children in Jiu-Jitsu as early as 2 years old at Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club helps build confidence, develop motor skills, teach discipline, and foster healthy habits that benefit them both on and off the mats.

This past Saturday at Jiu-Jitsu World League, one of our young competitors reminded us of the incredible lessons that Jiu-Jitsu teaches about resilience. His journey through the competition wasn’t just about medals—it was about perseverance, growth, and heart.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Competing

Competition can be an emotional experience, especially for kids. After a tough loss in his first match, our student was shaken and overwhelmed. Losing is never easy, and it’s normal to feel discouraged in those moments.

But the real test of character isn’t in avoiding setbacks—it’s in how we respond to them. With some encouragement and support from Professor Mike, he was able to refocus and find joy in the process again. By the time he stepped back onto the mats for his second match, his excitement and determination had returned.

Rising to the Challenge

His second match was for third place in his bracket, and he gave it everything he had. He demonstrated incredible skill, securing back control multiple times and attempting several arm bars. His persistence paid off when he finished with a perfectly executed arm bar to claim victory. The pride and joy on his face said it all—this was more than just a win; it was a triumph of resilience.

What Jiu-Jitsu Teaches About Resilience

This story is a testament to why Jiu-Jitsu is such a powerful tool for personal growth, especially for children. Competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about learning how to navigate challenges, handle emotions, and keep pushing forward even when things feel tough.

In Jiu-Jitsu—and in life—setbacks are inevitable. But with resilience, guidance from supportive mentors, and a strong sense of community, anything is possible.

Join Our Community

At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we’re committed to helping our students grow into confident, resilient individuals both on and off the mats. If your child is ready to learn life-changing skills through Jiu-Jitsu, we’d love to welcome you to our academy.

In a world where personal safety is a growing concern, women everywhere are seeking effective ways to feel more secure and confident in their daily lives. Jiu-Jitsu, often called “the gentle art,” is emerging as one of the best self-defense options available—and for good reason.

Here at Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we believe that Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a martial art; it’s a powerful tool for empowerment, resilience, and self-protection.

Why Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu is unique because it focuses on technique and leverage rather than strength or size, making it ideal for women of all fitness levels. This martial art teaches practitioners how to defend themselves effectively against larger, stronger opponents, which is often the case in real-world self-defense situations.

3 Key Benefits for Women

1. Practical Self-Defense Skills
Unlike striking martial arts, Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes ground techniques where most real-life altercations end up. Learning escapes, holds, and submissions can give women the skills to neutralize threats effectively.

2. Boosted Confidence
Training regularly helps women feel more capable and less fearful in potentially dangerous situations. Knowing you can handle yourself provides an unmatched sense of empowerment.

3. A Supportive Community
At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, our classes create an environment where women can train in a safe, encouraging atmosphere. You’ll join a community that uplifts and inspires you to grow stronger mentally and physically.

What to Expect in Class

Our women-friendly classes are structured to ensure everyone feels comfortable. You’ll learn:

  • How to escape common holds and grabs
  • Effective techniques to neutralize larger attackers
  • Situational awareness and risk management

No prior experience is required, and all fitness levels are welcome.

Empower Yourself Today

Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about defense; it’s about taking control of your personal safety, gaining confidence, and becoming part of a supportive community. If you’re ready to take the first step, sign up for a free trial class today! CLICK HERE!

At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we believe that true strength goes beyond physical power. It’s something that grows within you, one roll, one class, one challenge at a time. This Motivation Monday, we want to remind our students and their families about the power of perseverance, the importance of consistency, and how the lessons learned on the mats translate to success in all areas of life.

The Power of Showing Up

Sometimes, the hardest part of any journey is just getting started. Whether it’s stepping onto the mats for your first Jiu-Jitsu class, tackling a new project at work, or facing a tough challenge in life, taking that first step can feel daunting. But here’s the thing: **success doesn’t come from being perfect; it comes from showing up, again and again**.

We see it all the time in our classes—children who were once hesitant, shy, or unsure of themselves transforming over time into confident, capable young athletes. The secret? Consistently showing up, even when it’s hard, even when they’re tired, even when things don’t go their way.

In Jiu-Jitsu, just like in life, the key is persistence. Every time your child shows up to class, they’re not just getting physically stronger—they’re developing a mindset that embraces challenge, effort, and growth. This is the kind of resilience that will serve them well in school, friendships, and any other obstacles life throws their way.

Embracing the Struggle

It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t come easily. Whether your child is struggling to learn a new technique or having a tough time against a more experienced training partner, it’s important to remember that growth happens outside of the comfort zone.

Jiu-Jitsu teaches kids that it’s okay to struggle, to make mistakes, and even to lose. In fact, those are the moments that teach the most valuable lessons. The mats are a safe place to learn that success doesn’t always mean winning—it often means learning from failure, making adjustments, and trying again.

So, on this Motivation Monday, we encourage you and your child to embrace the struggles, the tough days, and the moments when progress feels slow. Every tap-out, every missed move, every tough roll is a step closer to becoming not just a better Jiu-Jitsu athlete but a stronger, more resilient person.

The Community That Lifts Us Up

One of the most powerful aspects of Jiu-Jitsu is the sense of community it creates. At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we see students supporting one another, offering encouragement, and celebrating each other’s progress. It’s a reminder that while Jiu-Jitsu is an individual journey, it’s one that’s made richer by those who train alongside you.

The friendships and bonds formed on the mats can make all the difference, especially on those days when motivation feels low. Knowing that you have a team cheering you on can inspire you to keep pushing forward. This sense of belonging is something we treasure at our academy, and it’s a big part of why our students look forward to coming back week after week.

Applying Jiu-Jitsu Lessons to Life

As we kick off a new week, let’s take a moment to reflect on the lessons Jiu-Jitsu teaches us about life:

  1. Perseverance: Keep showing up, even when it’s hard.
  2. Resilience: Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow.
  3. Patience: Progress takes time, and every step forward counts.
  4. Community: Lean on your team for support and motivation.

Whether your child is preparing for a tough week at school, a big exam, or a challenging moment in their personal life, remind them that the strength they’ve built on the mats is something they can draw on anytime. The same perseverance, focus, and resilience they practice in Jiu-Jitsu will carry them through life’s toughest moments.

Here’s to starting the week strong, staying committed, and embracing every challenge that comes our way. 💪🥋

If your child has started their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey, you might find yourself wondering: Should they compete? At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we understand that this is a big decision for many parents. While some children are excited to test their skills in a competition setting, others might find the idea of stepping onto the mat in front of a crowd intimidating. The truth is, whether your child competes or not is entirely up to them (and you) — and either choice is perfectly okay!

In this blog, we’ll dive into the benefits of competition for kids, why it’s not necessary for everyone, and how we support both competitors and non-competitors alike at our academy.

The Benefits of Competition for Kids

1. Building Confidence

One of the most significant benefits of competing is that it can help kids develop confidence. Stepping onto the mat in front of peers, coaches, and parents is no small feat, and it takes courage. Win or lose, the experience of trying their best can help children learn that they are capable of more than they thought.

2. Learning to Overcome Challenges

Competition introduces children to healthy challenges. In the controlled environment of a tournament, kids learn to deal with pressure, manage nerves, and keep going even if things don’t go their way. These are skills that will serve them well beyond the world of Jiu-Jitsu.

3. Accelerated Learning

For children who are looking to take their skills to the next level, competition can be a great motivator. It challenges them to focus, train hard, and sharpen their techniques. Plus, competing against other children of similar skill levels gives them an opportunity to see how far they’ve come.

4. Developing Sportsmanship

At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we emphasize good sportsmanship, whether it’s shaking hands with an opponent after a tough match or learning how to gracefully accept a loss. Competing helps kids understand that it’s not just about winning, but also about respecting others and growing as a person.

5. Feeling a Sense of Accomplishment

The thrill of stepping onto the mat, giving it their all, and hearing the cheers from their teammates can be an incredibly rewarding experience for a child. It builds pride in their hard work and effort, whether they walk away with a medal or not.

Why Competition Isn’t for Every Child

1. Enjoying the Process

Not every child is interested in competing, and that’s perfectly fine. Some kids simply enjoy the art of Jiu-Jitsu, learning new techniques, and making friends. They might prefer the structure of regular classes where they can learn at their own pace, without the added pressure of a tournament.

2. Different Motivations

Many parents enroll their children in Jiu-Jitsu for reasons like self-defense, physical fitness, or simply to build confidence and discipline. Your child can still achieve all of these benefits without ever competing. They can develop the same skills, build friendships, and grow as individuals without the need to test themselves in a competitive environment.

3. The Importance of Having Fun

At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we believe that the primary focus for kids should be having fun and enjoying the journey. If the idea of competing feels like a burden to your child or takes away their joy for the sport, it may not be the right path for them. The last thing we want is for kids to feel pressured or stressed about their training.

Our Approach at Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club

We don’t push competition on any of our students. For us, Jiu-Jitsu is about helping kids grow, both on and off the mats. However, if your child shows an interest in competing, we’re fully prepared to provide the support and guidance they need to succeed. With world-class instructors, including world champions, on our team, we have the expertise to help your child achieve their goals in competition. Our coaches will help them sharpen their techniques, develop a strategy, and build the confidence to perform their best in a tournament.

At the same time, we equally celebrate the achievements of our students who focus on enjoying their training in class. Whether your child is looking to be a fierce competitor or simply wants to enjoy learning something new, we have a place for them here.

Finding the Right Path for Your Child

Ultimately, the decision to compete should come from your child’s own interests and enthusiasm. At Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, we support whatever path they choose. We encourage kids to try competition if they’re curious, but we also emphasize that it’s not necessary to be successful in Jiu-Jitsu. Every child’s journey is unique, and our goal is to help them grow into confident, resilient individuals — whether they ever compete or not.

When most people first step onto the mats at Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club, they come with a mixture of excitement and nerves. Maybe they’ve heard stories about how empowering Jiu-Jitsu is, or perhaps they’re simply curious about what it takes to become proficient in the “gentle art.” What few realize is that the road to becoming good at Jiu-Jitsu is one marked by grit, humility, and moments of deep personal growth. It is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who embrace the challenge, the rewards are immeasurable.

Embracing the Learning Curve

Starting Jiu-Jitsu can be humbling. Really humbling. It doesn’t matter if you’re a star athlete in another sport or in peak physical shape—on the mats, everyone is a beginner. You’ll fumble through techniques, find yourself completely at a loss during live rolls, and yes, you will get submitted… a lot. It’s part of the process. In fact, one of the first lessons Jiu-Jitsu teaches is that it’s okay to be terrible at something for a while. That’s not an easy concept to swallow in a world that often demands instant results.

Humility becomes your most valuable training partner. It teaches you to set aside your ego and accept that mastery will take time, perhaps longer than you expected. But in that struggle lies the beauty of Jiu-Jitsu: You learn to find joy in the journey, rather than just the destination.

The Power of Showing Up

The secret to success in Jiu-Jitsu is simple, though not easy—just keep showing up. Even when it feels like you’re not improving, even when frustration gnaws at your confidence, keep coming back. Progress in Jiu-Jitsu is often invisible at first. It’s easy to miss how your timing has improved or how your defense is getting tighter, but your dedication compounds over time, like interest on an investment.

It takes a special kind of perseverance to return to the mats after a rough session, knowing full well that there will be more struggles ahead. Yet, with each class, you’re learning valuable lessons: the importance of discipline, the ability to persevere through discomfort, and the resilience to push forward even when things feel impossible.

The Joy of Small Victories

Then, almost unexpectedly, something magical happens. You nail that sweep you’ve been drilling for weeks. You escape a tough submission that used to trap you every time. Your instructor gives you a nod of approval or you hear your training partner say, “Wow, that was great.” These moments may seem small to an outsider, but for anyone who’s put in the work, they’re monumental. They remind you that you are growing, evolving, and becoming someone stronger than you were before.

These tiny victories accumulate into a larger sense of accomplishment, a feeling that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. Every success on the mats is earned—nothing comes easy, and that’s what makes Jiu-Jitsu so rewarding. When you do achieve something, it’s because you dedicated yourself to the process, and that feeling stays with you long after you’ve left the gym.

A Lifelong Journey

In the end, Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. It’s about developing a mindset that embraces challenges and celebrates growth, no matter how incremental. Every black belt started as a white belt, humbled by the same struggles you face today. What set them apart was their dedication to keep moving forward, one class at a time.

If you’re ready to embark on this incredible journey, our team at Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club is here to guide and support you. The path to mastery is long, but the lessons you’ll learn along the way—about humility, resilience, and personal triumph—will stay with you forever.

So come join us on the mats. Show up, keep pushing, and embrace the process. The best version of yourself is waiting to be discovered, one roll at a time.
